Reading and Phonics

Reading for Pleasure

At Camelford Community Primary School, we aim to inspire all children to have a love of books and reading and to ensure that reading is a pleasurable experience both at school and at home. We believe that reading is key to children’s learning across the curriculum.

All children are given reading books to take home (see below). Pupils are also encouraged to borrow books from our school library. Every class has a weekly slot in the school library and all children have library cards that enable them to borrow books. We encourage families to read with and to their children as much as possible and also to discuss books with their children.

Many of the books in our school library have been chosen by pupils. The Writing Ambassadors (at their request) have purchased sets of books chosen especially to appeal to boy readers and girl readers and they have set up designated ‘zones’ in the library. Some year 6 pupils work as volunteer librarians alongside our part-time librarian.

Once a week, children in years 1-6 meet for Reading Buddies. Children are paired with a ‘buddy’ from another class and given time to share books/read to each other. Parents are invited to join their children for these sessions.

Our library plays host to many special events including family breakfasts in the library, book signings and monthly book and cake sales.

Phonics

At Camelford Primary School, early reading is taught using synthetic phonics as the main approach to reading. Pupils are systematically taught the phonemes (sounds), how to blend the sounds for reading, and how to segment the sounds in order to write/spell words. They are taught to use their phonic skills and knowledge as their first approach to reading, but are also taught high frequency/’tricky’ (Red) words which cannot be decoded. Comprehension

The school uses the successful Read Write Inc scheme to teach phonics. Children in Reception, year 1 and 2 are grouped according to ability and taught phonics in smaller groups.

Reading Books

Class teachers regularly assess pupils to ensure that reading books present an appropriate level of challenge for each child. Before children learn to read, they take home books to read with their parents. When children are starting on their reading learning journey, they are given phonetically decodable books which they can read using their phonics skills. Once children have developed their ability to sight-read some high frequency/’tricky’ (Red) words (words which cannot be decoded), they are able to progress through the reading book levels (bands). When children are able to read and understand more complex books, they are supported in choosing their own reading books from either their class library or our school library.

We have a range of up to date reading books from schemes such as Jolly Phonics/Jolly Readers, Floppy Phonics, Songbirds, Oxford Traditional Tales, Bug Club (online books as well as hard copies), Trackers and Project X.
