Year 6 Transition Week Work

Hi Year 6,

We hope that you have a really successful transition day at your new school. Remember to discuss your day with your friends as I'm sure you'll all be feeling a little nervous but very excited!

We've attached the next chapters of Stranger Days for you to read. Alongside this, there is a combined maths and SPAG activity for you to complete. We've also attached the maths cinema activity that you started in school.

This week our wonderful NHS celebrated 72 years of brilliant service. For English/History, we'd like you to research the origins of the NHS and produce a factfile on the NHS. This would include how and when it was introduced, what its purpose was and so on. A good site to get you started is: NHS Birthday Information

Quiz time! There's one more quiz to go in school. Tintagel currently lead 2-1. Make a quiz at home and if it's got some really good questions, we'll use it in school!

Have a good week. Share your experiences with us, via the 5/6 email, and tell your friends about how you get on.

*** Remember to tell your parents/carers to email us any photos you would like to be considered for the End of Year video.***

See you next week.

Year 5 home learning

Hi Year 5,

It was fantastic to see some of you last week. For those of you in school, don't forget to complete the home learning that Miss Mcguill set on Friday.

For those of you that are at home, I have attached some learning that links to learning we have been completing in school.

We are putting together a project books called 'Animal Adventures during Lockdown' - you might like to do the same?

Please post your learning onto padlet or email into school so we know you are OK.

We have been listening to this story- the children in school have enjoyed it- take a look by following this link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VwdHWpJ1Xk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ41GbR_3As

The links below are all about animals during lockdown. Have a look.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/gallery/2020/apr/22/animals-roaming-streets-coronavirus-lockdown-photos

https://www.countryliving.com/uk/news/g32066174/animals-deserted-towns-cities-lockdown/

https://www.news18.com/photogallery/world/wild-animals-are-strolling-public-places-during-coronavirus-lockdown-2586871-3.html

Can you write a newspaper report about the animals in lockdown?

Can you write a non-chronological report about an animal that you have researched?

In maths, take a look at the challenges attached. How many can you solve?

In science, can you have a go at one of these cool science investigations? https://www.whizzpopbang.com/science-experiments-for-kids/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMInMeKqLSl6gIVx4GyCh1k-QsNEAAYASAAEgJ7_fD_BwE

Have a great week.

Cornwall Virtual School Games

Year 5 - Mr Brown here. Apologies for posting this midweek as the competition started on Monday but you have three days to have a go.

On the first two days, the children in school had to do speed bounce, standling long jump, high jump and some bowling activities!

We've attached the powerpoint presentation, which will take you to Youtube links on how to complete the activities. If you send in your results, Mr Stevenson can add these to the school total!

Good luck!

Year 5 Home Learning - WC 22.06.20

Good morning Year 5,

We hope you are keeping well at home. We hope that your letter has arrived and we hope that you enjoyed reading your letter from one of your Year 5/6 friends.

We are looking forward to seeing some of you on Thursday and Friday. If you have any questions about coming in, please don't hesitate to contact us via the Year 5/6 email.

Below you'll see links to the reading, English and maths that can be done alongside any BBC Bitesize work that you're doing.

  • We hope that you enjoyed the first four chapters of Stranger Days. It's a really fascinating book and we can only tell you that it gets even stranger and weirder but perhaps that's what makes it such a good read. We've attached the next few chapters, along with the comprehension to go with it. The comprehension is based on Chapters 8 and 9.
  • For English, we really do hope that you enjoyed reading the letter from your friends. If you'd like to write them a response, we've put a draft letter plan template and an example letter for you to have a look at. We can tell you now that the children in school would absolutely love to hear from you all.
  • Maths - we've added some measurements work to have a go at. It involves converting grams to kilograms, cm to metres and so on. If you find it challening, have a look at the powerpoint to get you started, ask your adults at home to help or use google to check the conversions.
    • In addition to this, please have a look at the arithmetic example test from a previous SATs paper. We'll attach the mark scheme so you can mark it at home. :)
    • There is also a good sheet of maths investigations to keep you going. :)

Keep safe and remember you can contact us via the Year 5/6 email or via Padlet https://en-gb.padlet.com/gsmith89/W5

Year 5 Home Learning - W/C 15th June 2020

Good morning Year 5,

We hope you are keeping well at home. We are all really PROUD of what you've achieved. Keep going.

Below you'll see links to the reading, English and maths that can be done alongside any BBC Bitesize work that you're doing.

  • We are really enjoying reading 'Stranger Days in Peculiar Hill' and we've attached the first four chapters, along with the comprehension that we did in school.
  • For the English, why don't you have a look at the impact of lockdown on the wildlife all around the world. We think you'd be amazed at the different locations that certain animals found themselves! We've attached Mr Brown's example, along with a plan to get you started.
  • For maths, there are lots of different NRICH maths investigations that we've been attempting in school. They're hard but a good challenge. Fluent in Five will resume for next week. I've attached a practice arithmetic test to have a go at.
    • The maths time cards investigation involves you sorting all of the cards from shortest amount of time to longest amount of time.
    • For the squares. You need to plot 8 squares of different sizes on to the grid. Parents, check out https://nrich.maths.org/6280 for the solution or to get started.
  • TT Rockstars - YEAR 5, you're in a BATTLE against Year 6 until Friday @ 10am. Get rocking and scoring points!
  • We've also attached the Theme Park lesson 1 slides and work for you to get started with. It's a really good challenge and we'll share with you an example of what the Year 6 children have been doing.

Keep safe and remember you can contact us via the Year 5/6 email or via Padlet https://en-gb.padlet.com/gsmith89/W5

PE with Joe Wicks

Exercising the body is just as important as exercising the mind. The superb Joe Wicks (the Body Coach) is doing a workout at 9am each day to keep the nation moving. Now, we know that sleep is important so don't worry if you have a lie in!

The videos are available online daily and the good news .... Joe has said he will do this everyday (not sure on weekends) until the schools are open again.

Parents, no excuses! If you wanted to send in video evidence, we of course wouldn't put that on show for everyone to see .....

Joe's youtube page can be found at the following link: Joe Wicks Youtube Channel

Times Table Rock Stars

Accelerated Reader

We hope you can build in time for reading into your day.  This is a great opportunity to get lost in the wonderful world of books.

In school we use Accelerated Reader to quiz on the books the children read.

Below is the AR link so that your children can log in at home. Each child can log in to their own page and we can track their progress. They are very familiar with it and know how to use it. They have usernames and passwords that they have been using for some time in school so should remember them, but if they have forgotten, just email us and we will give you their login details again.

https://ukhosted110.renlearn.co.uk/2234818/

Children are encouraged to read within their level but that may not always be possible. If you have books at home that they would like to read and quiz on, and you would like to find out the book level, you can go to this link. It will tell you the book level and points value.

https://www.arbookfind.co.uk/UserType.aspx?RedirectURL=%2fdefault.aspx

If you don’t have a book at home that your child wants to read, you find online texts/eBooks here. They are all free or are allowing free registration for the time being.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page

https://www.getepic.com/?fbclid=IwAR36Ov46vE46gDdITiePCU_tiBiEVAS2u6keDezsDYpnhoaYSO0PwWgqvQE

This is very useful because you can search by level.  When you register it askes you how you would like to search level books.  Please select AR.

https://readon.myon.co.uk/library/browse.html?fbclid=IwAR0JQ8yaBa4XHoFqFsHkzfpwgpeC0sS7OyqhsonbPZVuIvt7r1d6HPoYZaY

This is last one is by Renaissance, the company that provide Accelerated Reader and is also sorted by book level.
